Hi
This is quite interesting because when I was first diagnosed my rhummy did not want me to take FA and just told me to take MTX 20mg weekly because he believed the FA would decrease the effect of MTX, and MTX would get into my system more quickly without adding FA.
The MTX kicked in after approx 7 weeks.
Folic acid was introduced 5 months later when I started getting infections, but then RA pain returned and I have now been increased to 25mg weekly and 10mg FA.

I took just 1x5mg Folic Acid on a Friday, 22.5mg MXT on the Monday for years then nausea became a problem so I now take 1x5mg for 4 days starting 48 hours after the MXT - who knows! Janice.

I take 9 Methotrexates (22.5mg) on a Friday night and then 10mg of Folic Acid on a Sunday morning. I was told to take it the day after I take MTX but made the executive decision to do it on Sunday morning as I take the MTX just before going to bed on Fridays.....I assumed they would presume MTX was taken in the morning....

Hi Paula
I know you posted the web site re folic acid and mxt in early march but have only just seen it. Very interesting. It has solved a problem for me, whether to increase fc for hair loss or stay same. Hair loss is very bad at the moment so am going to try 4 a week. I think I am now realising that self control of meds is the only way. I think I know as much about RA as the pros I have spoken too. They know lots about the condition but not much about dosage. I suppose to be fair it is a difficult call because we all react differently but I am very frustrated at the moment with various side effects. Having great problems with my mouth as well. Everything tastes disgusting. Maybe extra folic acid will help with that too. Sorry to be so negative. Not usually. Just going through a bad patch at the minute. Thanks for listening

Hi Sheila, Don't worry about complaining on here its the best place for it! Yes, the horrid taste, won't go away whatever you eat or drink or how often you clean your teeth, its on my list for the next appointment. Then there's the headaches I never used to get, the occassional raging thirst, loss of appetite, occassional nausea but hey my periods have stopped so there's a good side effect for you! Just waiting for all my hair to fall out as well now. But the side effects do seem to come and go, so I'm assuming they relate to whatever else is going on in your body at the time? I don't know though maybe, its just random and I'm trying to analyse it too much but the drugs do make you ramble on a bit as well don't they? Sara x

If you check on the Royal Bath Hospital for Rheumatology (a centre of excellence in the treatment of rheumatological diseases) web site, there is a very interesting note on folic acid

Mine is once a week 3 days after my mtx. I was told it was to reduce the side effects of the mtx - and could be increased if my bloods showed I needed it.

Hi
I have been on mtx for 10 years, since I was diagnosed. Have always taken folic acid only once a week, the day after mtx.
Best wishes Lisa xx

Hi all I forgot to mention in my earlier post on folic acid subject that 2 rheumy nurses in the same hospital, same clinic, under same rheumatologist have given me completely different advice re folic acid. One told me I could take 6 a week to see if side effects lessen then I could go back to 1 a week or stay on 6. It didn't matter. The other one a couple of weeks later said don't take 6 stay on 1. The annoying thing is that neither of them has given me an explanation. Someone on the forum said that folic acid reduces the efficacy of mtx but when I googled it said 'it did reduce efficacy if being used as a cancer drug' but no mention of it when used for RA. We definitely need some answers on this subject. I am going to push it at my next visit and will let you know what is said. Love Sheila x
